Die Cutting with Felt
Hi everyone, thanks so much for stopping by today! I am sharing with you some projects I have created using the adorable Spring Plush dies from Simon Says Stamp!
The felt trend has been hugely popular right now and I had never really used felt in my crafting prior to last month. Felt is a great way to add interest and texture to your crafting projects and after trying it, I actually love it! I know many crafters though who are not as big on making felt projects, and today’s ideas are geared toward using the Simon Says Stamp Spring Plush dies for not only felt plushes but also for cards!
For all my die cutting I used the Big Shot machine along with the magnetic platform and a regular cutting sandwich. The dies cut cleanly using the Simon Says Stamp felts; for generic felt brands, you may want to add a cardstock shim to your cutting sandwich.
Because these dies create cutting holes into the felt, the tiny negative pieces of felt have a tendency to stick inside the holes on the die. I hold the dies over a trash can and use my Spellbinders Tool-in-One to pop those little pieces out. I recommend removing these little pieces from your dies immediately after die cutting a shape, as this will ensure you get perfectly cut felt pieces every time.
For adhering felt or embellishments that did not require sewing, I used Aleene’s Tacky Glue. All products used in this post are linked at the end to Simon Says Stamp.
My first project features the Happy Sunshine dies; this super cute sun is sure to make anyone smile! :) I die cut it using two colors of yellow felt and sewed them together using yellow floss. I did not stuff this one, which allows me to mount this onto a card at some point. I added some embellishments using black enamel dots (Doodlebug) and pink buttons (28 Lilac Lane).
Next I have a heart pocket I created with the Charmed Heart die set. I used pink and red felts for the heart and yellow, pink and green felts for the smaller elements. The heart pieces are sewn together and I adhered the felt elements onto the heart using tacky glue. I embellished the heart and elements using sequins and pearls (28 Lilac Lane).
Next comes the Plush Daisy! I love how happy this flower is, and I created two of them. The first one is die cut from white and yellow felt; I used both yellow and white embroidery floss to sew the pieces together (did not stuff them). For an embellishment I glued a large, yellow button in the center.
The second daisy is done slightly different; here I used yellow and brown felt and sewed the pieces together with multiple shades of floss to create a two-tone effect. To do this, I sewed through every other stitch with one color; once I got all the way around, I changed floss colors and went back through every stitch I skipped. I used two shades of yellow on the daisy (with white in the middle to create a highlight); then switched to yellow and brown on the center. I kept this one more simple and did not embellish it.
Finally, for all my fellow cardmakers out there, I created a card using the Puffy Cloud die! I die cut the cloud from gray felt and used the same two-tone floss effect to sew it together (unstuffed). The raindrops are cut from blue felt and I added some Wink of Stella clear glitter over top to create a shimmery look. I used Simon Says Stamp’s Happy Thoughts stamp set for the sentiment and their Raindrops stencil for the background (inked with Peacock Feathers distress ink).
I hope this post has inspired you to use your Spring Plush dies and other supplies to create fun, happy projects!
