Bad Timing
Happy Friday! Today I have a masculine, belated birthday card to share with you, featuring a bit of selective stamping that I did to have my cat’s face to achieve a completely different expression then originally intended!
I totally love the “It’s Your Day” stamp set by Penny Black… it has the sweetest cat and mouse images on it, all paired with some great birthday elements. I wanted to have the cat-with-balloon stamp be the focal image of my card, but because I was creating a belated birthday card, his happy expression just didn’t seem to fit.
So, I decided to do some selective stamping, masking off his face with some washi tape, and stamping the rest of the image onto my watercolor panel. I then took a black multiliner and drew in a disappointed/sad expression on his face, which fit my theme a lot better. I also did a bit of sketching to create some “ground” for my cat to stand on. To color my cat, I used my Derwent watercolor pencils and added some Glossy Accents to his eyes, nose and balloon.
Now, I don’t like sad things… so to put a more lighthearted, funny spin to this card, I came up with the sentiment “I have bad timing” to stamp on the front (inside, the sentiment continues… we’ll get to that in a moment). I love the font from Lawn Fawn’s “Milo’s ABCs” stamp set, and thought this would be perfect for spelling out my sentiment. The ink I used was Tim Holtz Festive Berries, and I heat embossed it with clear detail powder, to prevent smudging.
I layered my cat panel onto a piece of black cardstock and mounted onto a watercolor paper card base, cut to 4 3/4″ by 5 1/4″ (folded). I also tied a red ribbon around the bottom portion of the card.
Finally, to finish off the rest of the sentiment… inside, the card reads “happy belated birthday”. I selectively stamped the word “birthday” from the Penny Black “Paint the Town” stamp set, and also used the “Milo’s ABCs” set to create the rest of the greeting. The inks used were some black dye ink and some Tim Holtz Festive Berries distress ink.
So that completes my masculine birthday card! I hope you enjoyed my funny take on this belated birthday wish, and thanks so much for stopping by my crafty corner this morning!
Challenges
This card is submitted into the Seize the Birthday challenge, with the toppings of “Masculine”. I’ve also submitted the card into the Addicted to Stamps challenge #134 “CAS” and the Timeout Challenge #26… and it is Timeout’s 1st birthday celebration, making this challenge extra-duper fun, and I was inspired by the colors in the challenge for the colors of my card.

This is quite simply a masterpiece, Nina-Marie! Seriously. I loved reading your process and the love and care and effort that went into creating this adorable card. If this doesn’t win in the challenges, it’ll be a darn shame because it is so deserving IMHO!! Hugs, Darnell
