Make Backgrounds to Cut with Dies – Easy Coloring! + Exclusive Tim Holtz Die!
If the video does not display, please click here to watch on my YouTube channel.
I am sharing one of my favorite techniques for coloring die cuts – creating backgrounds from ink and cutting from them! I have used this technique for years and always enjoy the unique effects it gives. I’m also excited to be featuring the exclusive Feathered Cardinal die from Tim Holtz that is available only at Simon Says Stamp while supplies last! It is a free gift with any purchase of Tim Holtz brand products – so simply add your Tim Holtz must-haves to your cart and Simon will pop this beauty in your order! Talk about a great value!
I made backgrounds with Tim Holtz Distress Inks; Festive Berries, Crackling Campfire, Fired Brick, Evergreen Bough, Pine Needles and Speckled Egg. Then I cut those backgrounds with the Feathered Cardinal die and a pine needle die. This is the focal point of my scene.
Behind the cardinal scene is a soft blending of snowflakes from a Simon stencil. I added greetings made with the Merry Christmas Script die and sentiment strips. To embellish the scene I die cut Simon’s Stitched Flakes and Christmas Foliage dies; on the pine needles are Distress Mica Flakes for a snowy effect.
If you love this cute cardinal, don’t forget that it is free gift with any Tim Holtz purchase while supplies last! I hope I inspired you to day and that you’ll try some of the ideas I’ve shared in your next die cutting project!

Beautiful card. Thank you. Merry Christmas. Be safe.
2020 has REALLY been cruel now. I had the cardinal in my cart, went to Checkout, it wasn’t there. They sold out even as I was placing my order. It’s just not fair!! LOL. I love your card and I DO hate that I missed this beautiful bird.
Gorgeous card! Thanks so much for the great inspiration! Take care! :)
