Building a Scene + Nuvo Creative Pen Markers + Newton's Birthday Hop | Nina-Marie Design

Hello everyone! I am so excited to be a special guest for the Newton’s Nook 4th Anniversary celebration hop! Jen and Jeff Jackson from Newton’s Nook are such fabulous people and I love supporting their stamp company whenever I can! It’s so awesome that they are celebrating this 4-year milestone… CONGRATS to both of them!

In my card today, I wanted to showcase the new Winston’s Lakehouse stamp set. I am a big fan of building scenes, so when I saw this set, I immediately knew this was what I was going to do with it!

For coloring my stamped images, I used Tonic Studios’ Nuvo Creative Pens. These are alcohol-based markers – much like Copics. There are differences however, and I wanted to share that with you today.

One of the things I really enjoyed about these Creative Pens is the fact that they come in blending sets. Which means all the guess work of figuring out which colors to use together is eliminated. For those of you that struggle with Copic coloring or are new to alcohol markers, I would highly recommend you trying out these markers! I think you’ll find that you can achieve the blended results you want much easier.

Another difference between Copics and Nuvo Creative Pens are the brush tips. Copic of course has a chisel nib and a super brush nib. The super brush nib is what most everyone uses for coloring in stamped images. Chisel nibs come in handy when trying to cover a large area (with a brush nib, that task would take much longer!).

The Creative Pens have that useful chisel nib, but the other nib is the one I am excited about; the other end of the Creative Pen has a bullet nib. The bullet nib is smaller than a super brush nib and allows you to get into very small areas SO easily!

I do not believe that the Nuvo Creative Pens are refillable; if they are, there are not any refills available for the markers yet. But the markers are extremely juicy and blend together beautifully. In my video today, I used them with Canson Bristol Smooth paper. This paper is very similar to other bristol papers and worked great for coloring with the Nuvo Creative Pens. I found that the markers did not bleed outside the lines as fast on this paper. On regular 110lb cardstock the markers did bleed faster. I would definitely still use these markers on regular cardstock; but when doing heavy shading, I would let the colors dry a minute before adding additional layering.

Another fun product I used in today’s card is the new Waves stencil from Newton’s Nook! Stencils are a new product line for Newton’s Nook and I loved pairing this one with the Winston’s Lakehouse stamp set.

In the video, I demonstrate how I used a layered ink blending technique and some water to get the realistic effect with the stencil. I used Distress Inks in Salty Ocean, Peacock Feathers and Broken China for the blending.
