A Sparkly Birthday

Happy Monday!

Today I am back to share a sparkle-filled birthday card, which incorporates a lot of fun texture in a very clean and simple design.

I loved the icing on the cupcake featured in the inspiration photo from the Cupcake Inspirations 300th challenge. The swirl of the turquoise, sugary treat was awesome, and I thought it would be so much fun to try to replicate something similar using texture paste.

So….

I went to work in mixing up a paste color using some Ranger Texture Paste and some VersaMagic Aquatic Splash ink. I love the color of this ink pad (probably because my favorite color is teal!), and thought it matched the icing on the picture fairly well. Once I had my paste mixed up, I took a damp paintbrush and began applying it to the icing of a cupcake image I had already stamped on some watercolor paper.

The cupcake stamp I used was from the Inky Antics “Cupcake Birdy” stamp set; I did not follow the exact shape of the cupcake as I worked my way up the image, as I wanted my cupcake to have a bit more of a “tiered” look.

Once my cupcake’s icing was dry -this will take a while- I fussy cut the icing out and adhered it to the wrapper that  I had made by stamping the same cupcake image onto some patterned paper and fussy cutting it out. I then applied that same Aquatic Splash teal ink to the edges of the icing, and I took a black marker and outlined the edges of the wrapper, just to hide any white paper areas.

Moving on to my card base, I took some Heidi Swapp gold color shine and created a watercolored area in the upper center of the card. This is where my cupcake will eventually sit. I applied about three layers of watercolor in that area, drying it in between each layer, as I wanted it to be a really intense gold. After my watercoloring was complete, I flicked on ink splatters of that same color shine, to add some interest. If you follow my blog, you know love this technique! :)

Next, with Lawn Fawn’s “Milo’s ABCs” stamp set, I spelled out the word “sparkly birthday” and stamped it in some Versamark Ink and heat embossed it with some Princess Gold embossing powder by Ranger. The “sending you” sentiment is from the Hero Arts “Everyday Sayings” set, and is stamped in some turquoise ink, and the “wishes” is from the Simon Says Stamp “Celebrate” stamp set and is stamped in some Doll Pink ink.

For the last bit of stamping, I took the Sweet Stamp Shop “Happy Hour” set, and stamped two of the sparkles in Versamark ink; I heat embossed them with the same Princess Gold powder.

Finally, I adhered my little cupcake onto the card with foam tape, applied some Wink of Stella clear glitter to the icing, and adhered lime green, light purple, dark pink and clear rhinestones to be the “sprinkles”.

I also tied a length of purple baker’s twine around the top of the card and rounded the bottom corners of the card base using the Fiskars “Round the Bend” punch.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this textured, shimmery birthday card and that it has inspired you to create a card of your own that truly sparkles!

Thanks for stopping by! Happy creating! :)

Inspiration & Challenges

Part of the inspiration for the cupcake on this card is from the Cupcake Inspirations 300th challenge celebration, and is submitted into the challenge.

My color scheme was inspired by the colors in the Cure for the Monday Blues challenge #45 inspiration photo, and is submitted into the challenge.

I’ve also submitted this card into the Simon Says Stamp “Anything Goes” Wednesday challenge and the Virginia’s View challenge #13 “Embossing”.
