Workshop Wednesday: Make a Wish

Make a Wish_2

Hello everyone! I am so glad you’ve stopped by for this week’s Workshop Wednesday! I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy working with colored pencils, and today’s post is all adding color and creating depth with your pencils. All you need for this technique is a good set of colored pencils, and a blender pen.

Another thing I will mention is that you don’t necessarily need is the expensive high end pencils; while they work great, you can achieve the same look with even a basic watercolor pencil set. The pencils I like to use for this are Primacolor pencils and watercolor pencils. I usually end up using a mixture of both in my projects.

Make a Wish_4

To begin, I started off by stamping the hedgehog with the cupcake from the Penny Black “Sweet and Cute” stamp set in some StazOn Timber Brown ink onto my watercolor paper card base. I also did some selective stamping and added a few more of the icing drops to form a trail following the hedgehog.

The word “wish” is from the Stamps of Life “Birthday 4 Subways” background stamp, and I simply cut the stamp apart to allow me to use the “wish” in my sentiment. The rest of the sentiment is from the same “Sweet and Cute” Penny Black stamp set. The inks used in the sentiment are the Timber Brown StazOn ink and the “Doll Pink” Simon Says Stamp dye ink.

Once my images were stamped, I began adding my colors with my pencils. My method is that I always start off with the lightest shades, and work my way up to the darkest color. This provides good shading and allows for the creating of depth to make your images more realistic.

The shades I chose for this project were:

  • a light pink, medium pink and red for the icing
  • cream, yellow and golden yellow for the cupcake wrapper and candle; the candle also has a fleck of orange in the very center
  • cream and light pink for the hedgehog’s body
  • brown, and two shades of a darker brown for the hedgehog’s fur, with some white flecks for highlights
  • grey and dark grey for the shadows on the ground and the candle stick.

I added some polka dots with a Heidi Swapp polka dot stencil and some Wild Honey and Worn Lipstick distress inks using an ink blending tool. And to finish up this one layer card, I added some Wink of Stella clear glitter, and a bit of Glossy Accents, to portions of the icing, candle and hedgehog.

I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s card, and that it has inspired you to play around with your colored pencils as well. Thank you so much for stopping by!

Happy Creating! :)

My Favorite Pencils

I thought I might give you a few references of some of my favorite coloring pencils that I use for my projects… My favorite watercolor pencils are by Prismacolor and Royal Langnickle. Both provide great colors in rich hues, and blend very nicely with both water and blender pens.

For regular colored pencils, my preferred brands are Prismacolor and Faber Castell. These are good quality pencils that come in a wide range of colors.
